Surprise Donation from Surf Club Participant Ross

Meet Ross – a familiar face at Surf Club in Dunbar, who recently surprised us with an incredibly kind donation.

Ross was referred to The Wave Project in 2019 and initially was very unsure about taking part in the 6 week surf therapy course. Through perseverance from Ross and encouragement from his family, Ross made it down to the beach. Since that first session, he has never looked back.

“As a family we can’t thank everyone at The Wave Project Scotland enough for all they’ve done to help ross grow into the confident young man he is now. From that first night when he was having a full on melt down at me, to seeing the huge smile on his face after it! You’re all worth your weight in gold and we as a family hold you all dearly in our hearts.” – Ross’s mother, Ruth

Ross has always impressed us in the water. He tackles any conditions that the ocean sends his way, always perseveres, and has fun while surfing. And while surfing has been a great activity for Ross to take up, it is the people at The Wave Project that have had a profound impact on him.

“Alison, Brian and Steve are extra special to Ross, and for that we as his parents can put into words how grateful we are. Ross changed and grew so much after coming to surf therapy even if he hated me that first day!” – Ross’s mother, Ruth

Ross quickly learned that at The Wave Project sessions there was no expectations or pressure on him. It was a safe space for fun and connection. Where he could be himself without fear of judgement. A space for him to grow. It always a pleasure to have Ross at sessions. He is warm, kind and always looking out for others.

Ross called up Alison, and asked if she could stop by the house as he had something for her.  Alison was greeted with a big hug and a thank you for helping him so much when he was at school. Alison was blown away when Ross handed her £1000 to be donated to The Wave Project. After receiving some inheritance money, the first thing Ross wanted to do with it was donate some to The Wave Project.

“I wanted to donate to the wave project because I feel like everyone there helped me to become more confident. I’ve made friends at surf club and have always had a soft spot for Steve who definitely helped me to relax and enjoy surf sessions.”

We are blown away by this incredibly kind gesture from Ross. As a young guy, for his first thought to be to donate to charity, it speaks to the maturity of his character and the care that Ross has for others.

Thank you Ross. It has been a privilege to watch you grow up, and for The Wave Project to part of that journey.
