The Wave Project Adaptive Surfing: A Journey from Existing to Living
At The Wave Project, we often witness the transformative power of surfing and we are excited to share a powerful example of this through a profoundly moving testimonial from one of our surfers. Her story vividly illustrates the healing and life-affirming potential of our Adaptive Surfing programmes.
Facing Life’s Challenges
Our surfer, a single mother of an autistic child, has been battling significant medical challenges. In her own words: “As someone who faces significant medical challenges daily, my life often revolves around managing symptoms rather than truly living. The relentless nature of these challenges can be soul-destroying, and I had almost given up on feeling any sense of worth or joy.”
The daily struggle of managing her health while caring for her child had left her feeling drained and hopeless: “Being frequently confined to bed, dealing with joint pain, migraines, and severe abdominal discomfort and nausea has drained my life spirit. Trying to stay alive and being a single mum with an autistic child is a full-time job and I was just existing, not living.”
A personal tragedy became the catalyst for change: “Then about 3 months ago, my brother died suddenly. This made me re-evaluate my life and I realised I need to live more fully and to have more fun. So, I booked our first holiday in years and this led me to the Wave Project.”
Overcoming Self-Doubt
Despite initial hesitation and self-doubt, our surfer found the courage to take part in our programme: “When Ian said he could make surfing a possibility, I nearly backed out, feeling undeserving of such an opportunity and embarrassed by my weight and immobility. But the thought of my brother’s sudden passing reminded me that life is fleeting.”
The impact of the surfing session was profound and multifaceted: “Surfing with you all on Monday made me feel like a person again, not an inconvenience. Being part of a happy, motivated group, overcoming a physical challenge, and feeling that endorphin boost quietened the negative voices in my head.”
The physical benefits were unexpected: “I wasn’t aware of the pain in my back and joints or of getting tired because I got such an endorphin rush surfing!”
Finding New Joy
Perhaps most importantly, the experience rekindled our surfer’s joy and will to live: “The surfing reignited a spark in me, making me feel emotions I hadn’t experienced in years – freedom, achievement and joy.
“Thank you for giving me this opportunity. I hadn’t realised how much I need to be able to take risks and to push myself physically. It is what makes me tick. Going surfing with you has renewed my desire to live, not just exist!”
Stories like this are at the heart of why we do what we do at The Wave Project. We believe in the power of surfing to not just change lives, but to save them. By providing a supportive, inclusive environment we aim to help people rediscover their strength, joy and confidence.
