Autism Awareness and the Power of Surf Therapy – Ollie’s Story

After struggling with anxiety, Ollie found his smile again through Surf Therapy.

For many autistic children, navigating the world can be overwhelming. For Ollie, who was diagnosed at the age of four, high levels of anxiety made everyday life incredibly challenging. Other interventions were not working, and his family felt at a loss.

In 2022, Ollie was referred to The Wave Project, and from the moment he got into the water, something changed. His mum recalls:

“Being in the water was the first time I’d seen him smile in 18 months. Surfing gave us our happy, smiling boy back. It managed to take him from a very unhappy place and give him his own life back. As a family, we can’t thank you enough.”

Three years later, Ollie is catching waves as a regular member of our Surf Club at The Wave in Bristol. His confidence has grown, his smile is infectious and the water continues to be his happy place.

At The Wave Project, we know that blue spaces – whether the ocean or wave pools – offer a unique sense of calm and connection. The sensory experience of being in the water can help regulate emotions, reduce anxiety and build confidence. Our partnership with locations like Bristol’s inland surf destination, The Wave ensures that more young people, regardless of geography, can access the benefits of Surf Therapy year-round.

If you’d like to get involved, you can volunteer, donate, or partner with us to our life-changing work.
