Bude Surf Mentor recognition at Volunteer of the Year awards

We’re celebrating one of our volunteers, who has been recognised at Rewind Radio’s Volunteer of the Year awards, placing third out of hundreds of nominees.

At just 15 years old, Edward has become a vital and inspiring presence within The Wave Project’s Bude community. For the past two years, he has given his time to support other young people at Surf Therapy and Surf Club, while also stepping up to help at fundraising events, representing the charity at the Royal Cornwall Show and completing his Duke of Edinburgh volunteer hours with the team.

Edward regularly supports The Wave Project’s winter activities, including pool sessions and skateboarding meetups across Cornwall, often travelling long distances to ensure young people have the chance to connect and build confidence when surf conditions aren’t suitable.

Most importantly, he is a relatable role model for many of the children we support. His kindness, humour and empathy help young people feel seen, understood and accepted. Parents often share the difference he makes, with one telling us:

“Joey really enjoyed working with Edward… he saw similarities with himself and said he hoped he could be the same when he’s older. Joey struggles with the outside world and making friends, so the fact they gelled so well made the whole experience so much more for him.”

Edward’s dedication is recognised not just by beneficiaries, but also by fellow volunteers who say he lifts spirits, shares new ideas and is always ready to help at short notice.

Project Coordinator for Bude, Georgia Pine, said: “Edward is more than a volunteer – he’s a role model, mentor, and beacon of joy and inclusion for everyone he works with. We are so proud of everything he has achieved and delighted that his incredible contribution has been recognised through this award.”
