Celebrating Ian Bennett: Our BBC South West Unsung Hero!

We are absolutely thrilled to share that Ian Bennett, our Adaptive Lead, has been named the South West Unsung Hero at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards!

This award celebrates the very best volunteers in sport – individuals who dedicate their time and passion to making a real difference in their communities every day. Ian’s win places him among 15 regional winners from across the UK, all of whom will be in the spotlight tomorrow, Tuesday 17 December, as one of them is crowned the overall 2024 BBC Sports Personality Unsung Hero of the Year.

A Pioneer in Adaptive Surfing

Ian’s dedication to Adaptive Surfing is nothing short of inspiring. His love for the ocean, kindness and drive to ensure that everyone – regardless of ability – can experience the joy of surfing has transformed lives. Each year, thanks to Ian’s leadership and the support of our incredible team of volunteers, hundreds of people take to the waves for the first time. For many, it’s not just their first time on a surfboard but also their first chance to truly experience the ocean.

Leading the Way with Adaptive Surfing Hubs

We now operate four Adaptive Surfing Hubs across the country:

  • Croyde, Devon
  • Watergate Bay, Cornwall
  • Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  • Isle of Wight

These hubs serve as centres of excellence, enabling people of all abilities to enjoy surfing in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment. They are powered by our amazing volunteers who share The Wave Project’s mission to change lives through Surf Therapy.

Tune in Tomorrow!

As we celebrate Ian’s incredible achievement, we are also rooting for him in the final stage of the awards. Tune in tomorrow to cheer him on as the overall Unsung Hero of the Year is announced. Whatever the outcome, Ian is already a champion in our eyes, and his impact on the Adaptive Surfing community is immeasurable.

Ian, thank you for everything you do. Your work inspires us every day and reminds us of the transformative power of surfing and our community.
