Celebrating Our Cornwall Volunteers – Volunteer Week 2025
As part of Volunteer Week 2025, we’re shining a light on the amazing individuals who help make Surf Therapy sessions possible in Cornwall.
Whether they’re encouraging a young person to catch their first wave, offering words of support, or simply showing up with a smile, our volunteers are the heart of what we do.
Meet Bill, Kerrie, and Kim, three volunteers who bring passion, presence and joy to the beach…
For Bill, the most rewarding moments come when he sees change happening in real time:
“Parental feedback on the difference the sessions have made. Seeing the change in self-confidence of many of the kids involved. It has reminded me of how much impact you can have with what is actually minimal effort.”
His message to anyone considering volunteering? “You’ll get fitter, you’ll make good friends and most of all you’ll make a difference. Sometimes just getting in the water is all it takes.”
Kerrie joined the team because it was the perfect match for her love of surfing and working with children: “It’s always so fun pushing them into the waves and seeing how happy they are throughout the session.”
Her favourite moments are the ones where confidence builds before her eyes: “Seeing some of the kids catch their very first waves, bursting with joy… Being in the water and cheering them on, then celebrating once they’ve come off the wave! It’s taught me to always be positive.”
Through it all, Kerrie says volunteering has helped her grow too – especially in patience and positivity.
For Kim, moving to Cornwall meant a chance to connect with her community beyond the corporate world. What she enjoys most are the feel-good moments, especially during our Adaptive Surfing sessions.
“Seeing the smiles… It’s also great exercise.”
Kim’s choice to give her time has had a ripple effect – not just for the young people she supports, but for her own sense of purpose too.
