Evan’s 10-Year Journey with Surf Therapy

“The Wave Project has helped me become who I am today. They’ll be in my life forever.” For Evan, it’s always been more than surfing. It’s about the people, laughter, freedom and sense of belonging.

Having been part of The Wave Project Scotland for the past 10 years, Evan’s story reflects the transformative power of Surf Therapy, community and connection.

“The Wave Project is our saviour”

Evan’s family first discovered The Wave Project years ago, and it has since become an irreplaceable part of their lives:

“We come to The Wave Project after all these years because life without it is unimaginable. Alison and Brian are now family whether they want to be or not! The Wave Project is our saviour as Evan emerges from the water a different boy from the anxiety-ridden one that enters. Although the water plays a big part, The Wave Project is more than that. It’s the whole experience. The people. The atmosphere. The freedom. The acceptance. The Wave Project has changed and become a MASSIVE part of our lives and forever will be.”

From the start, Evan was a fan of Surf Club, drawn to the waves and the people who make it so special:

“The Wave Project is not just surfing. It’s the people behind who make it extra special. Alison is just the most amazing woman – no words can describe how amazing she is. Davide is one of the best coaches they have to offer, alongside Ru, of course. Jamie back in the day was amazing too. I could always have a good laugh with him and tell him anything. We’re still in touch now. Bri – one of the first volunteers I met – he’s always good fun.”

Finding Relaxation and Connection

Evan shares that he always feels more relaxed after a surf session, describing it as “the power of The Wave Project.” This sense of calm and connection is not limited to the beach he calls home. On a recent holiday to Devon, he had the chance to watch a session in Croyde. He said:

“As an outsider to their session, it was a very powerful thing to watch because I know that every kid there has their own stories and that The Wave Project will support them all.”

A Decade of Growth

Now, 10 years on, Evan looks back on his time with The Wave Project with gratitude. He explains how much it has shaped him:

“Over the last 10 years, The Wave Project has helped me become who I am today. They’ll be in my life forever.”
