George’s Journey with Surf Therapy
“The Wave Project team in Croyde are amazing, and we can never thank them enough for all they do. They’ve watched George grow and continue to look for new ways to support him. Surfing has given George so much confidence and joy – we’re forever grateful.” — Nicki, George’s mother

At The Wave Project, Surf Therapy isn’t just about catching waves – it is about empowering young people to connect with the ocean in a way that suits them best, building confidence and forming lasting bonds. George’s story is a testament to the incredible impact of our adaptive surf sessions, and how a simple connection with the sea can change a young person’s life.

George first joined us in Croyde seven years ago, just before his 10th birthday. At that time, he was a bit nervous about getting in the water, even when laying on a surfboard. His mentor, Ian, and The Wave Project team understood the importance of building trust and started by playing in the shallows, splashing around to make George feel at ease.
As George’s confidence grew, so did his enthusiasm. Ian then introduced a seated surfboard. Over the years, George transitioned to a new style of seated board with a supportive bucket seat.
“George’s speech has developed over the years, and he now leads the surf sessions, shouting, ‘faster team!’ and ‘go go go!’ as the waves roll in. He loves to ‘wipeout’ every session and always has a big smile on his face.” – Nicki

Surfing isn not just about riding waves – it is about connecting with a community that feels like family. George has built strong friendships with the team, who have supported him every step of the way. The volunteers know George so well that they can anticipate what he needs, and they feel a deep sense of pride in seeing how far he has come.
“George has made good friends with his surfing team who regularly take him out. They have seen George develop into the young man he is now, at 17, and he brings as much joy to them as they do to him. It’s truly heartwarming.”

George’s progress has also been life-changing for his family. Adaptive Surf Therapy with The Wave Project has allowed them to experience the ocean together:
“The Wave Project has become like a family to us. They not only take good care of George, but they make it possible for us all to be in the sea together. George’s little sister gets to surf with her brother, and we can all enjoy that time together, which would otherwise be impossible.”
George’s story is just one of many examples of how Surf Therapy can transform lives. But to continue supporting young people like George, we need your help.
