Lizzie’s Surfing Journey with The Wave Project

Lizzie, a young woman with Down’s syndrome, has always been a water enthusiast. In 2018, she joined The Wave Project family, embarking on a surfing adventure that would transform her life.

From the moment Lizzie hit the waves, it was clear she had found her element. On her very first outing, she astounded everyone by standing up on her surfboard, a moment that left her parents both shocked and emotional. This early success set the tone for Lizzie’s surfing journey.

Over the initial 6-week Surf Therapy programme, Lizzie faced various weather conditions – from torrential rain to blistering heat, big waves to calm seas. Yet, her enthusiasm never waned. Each week brought progress and growing confidence, as Lizzie formed friendships with fellow surfers and volunteers.

The Wave Project’s impact extended beyond the surf. During the challenging Covid lockdown, we provided much-needed support through paddle boarding and climbing activities, which Lizzie’s family and friends greatly appreciated.

Today, Lizzie’s passion for surfing continues to flourish. She eagerly anticipates each Surf Club session at Bigbury, where she feels happy, content and confident. Her skills have advanced to using a smaller board, and she now carries her own board and paddles out over the waves independently.

For Lizzie, surfing is more than just a sport. In her own words: “I like standing up and it makes me super happy. The water can be freezing cold but it’s still fun. I like big waves because they take me all the way onto the beach and I feel excited… Surfing makes me feel calm and relaxed.”

Surf Therapy has not only nurtured Lizzie’s surfing skills but also fostered her independence and organisational abilities. She now prepares her own surfing gear and takes care of it after sessions.

For Lizzie’s parents, The Wave Project has been a blessing. It provides them with an opportunity to relax, connect with other parents, and enjoy the beautiful coastal environment while knowing their daughter is thriving in a supportive and inclusive atmosphere.

Lizzie’s family said: “We are very grateful to The Wave Project and hope that Lizzie will enjoy many more years of surfing at Bigbury. Thank you. “
