Non-profit day: Celebrating 15 Years of Transforming Lives Through Surf Therapy

This Non-Profit Day, we’re celebrating something close to our hearts: the power of surfing to transform lives.

It’s a fitting moment to reflect on our journey so far, as 2026 marks 15 years since The Wave Project became a registered charity.

What began on a beach in Cornwall has grown into a nationwide movement, supporting thousands of children and young people through Surf Therapy and helping to shape the future of nature-based mental health support.

Where It All Began

The Wave Project’s story started in 2010, when our team began delivering Surf Therapy sessions in Cornwall. The idea was simple but powerful: harness the unique benefits of surfing and blue spaces to support young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

In 2011, The Wave Project became a registered charity, laying the foundations for what would become a pioneering force in Surf Therapy.

Growing a Movement

Over the years, we’ve continued to innovate and expand. We launched Surfing on Prescription, helping establish Surf Therapy as an evidence-based intervention. We opened our first Adaptive Surfing Hub, ensuring more people could experience the joy and benefits of surfing regardless of ability. We expanded beyond Cornwall and established Project Hubs across the UK, bringing Surf Therapy to more communities than ever before.
