What Makes Surf Therapy Different?

We’re celebrating what makes Surf Therapy such a unique experience and why it’s about so much more than learning to ride waves.

When people first hear about Surf Therapy, they often picture a typical surf lesson with wetsuits, boards, instructors and waves. But what we offer at The Wave Project is not about becoming a surfer, it’s about creating a space where young people feel safe, supported and free to be themselves.

Here’s what sets Surf Therapy apart:

It’s for everyone

No matter your background, ability, or confidence level, you’re welcome here. Our sessions are inclusive and designed to be a safe space where everyone can feel they belong, whether it’s their first time on the beach or the hundredth.

One-to-one support

Every young person is paired with a dedicated Surf Mentor who’s there just for them. This one-to-one support builds trust and connection, helping children and young people feel safe and seen, often for the first time in a while.

Freedom to choose

There’s no pressure to ‘perform’ or even to surf. Some young people spend the whole session paddling in the shallows. Others build sandcastles, dip their toes in the sea, or simply sit and talk. The focus is on autonomy, giving each person the choice to do what feels right for them, in that moment.

It’s not therapy but it can be therapeutic

Surf Therapy isn’t clinical. There are no assessments or expectations. But for many young people, the combination of a calm environment, the natural power of the ocean and the steady presence of someone who cares can have a profound impact on their mental and physical wellbeing.

Our volunteers are magic

Every Surf Therapy session is supported by trained volunteers. They choose to be there, not because they have to, but because they want to help. That sense of kindness, community and shared purpose is felt by everyone who comes along.

This is the power of Surf Therapy: a simple idea that makes a huge difference. Thank you to every supporter, volunteer and young person who helps make it possible.
