The Power of Adaptive Surfing
At The Wave Project, we’re constantly amazed by the impact our Adaptive Surfing sessions have on participants. Recently, we received heartwarming feedback from one of our surfers in Croyde that perfectly encapsulates why we do what we do.
Our participant, who lives with spinal cord damage and significant medical challenges, initially approached the session with hesitation. What unfolded that day was truly life-changing.

Physical Benefits
Despite assuming the session would be mostly passive due to physical limitations, our surfer discovered a full-body workout in disguise. The experience engaged forgotten muscles, improved breathing and provided a cardiovascular challenge – all while having fun! As they put it, “Surfing is sneaky!” The engaging environment and supportive volunteers made the physical exertion feel effortless in the moment. As he said: “The excitement of the activity got my heart pumping, and the thrill of feeling the wave’s power under me resulted in lots of shouts and squeals of fun.”
Emotional Benefits
Perhaps even more profound were the emotional benefits. Our participant, who had been struggling with feelings of worthlessness and merely existing, found a renewed zest for life. The session reignited emotions they hadn’t experienced in years – freedom, achievement and joy. In their words, “Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
I hadn’t realised how much I need to be able to take risks and to push myself physically. It is what makes me tick. Going surfing with you has renewed my desire to live, not just exist!”
The Power of Inclusivity
What struck us most was how the simple act of making surfing accessible created such a profound impact. Our surfer felt like “a person again, not an inconvenience.” This underscores the importance of our mission to make surfing inclusive for everyone, regardless of their physical abilities.

A Team Effort
The feedback also highlighted the crucial role our volunteers play. From assisting with transfers to offering encouragement, every small action contributed to creating a safe, exciting and empowering experience.
At The Wave Project, stories like these fuel our passion. They remind us that surfing is more than just a sport – it’s a vehicle for physical health, emotional wellbeing, and personal growth.
