Meet the team here in North Cornwall…we are made up of Wave Project staff, Surf Instructors, Surf Mentors and other types of Volunteers. Surf Instructors wear red rash vests, Surf Mentors silver and our Surfers wear blue to make it easy to work out who is who!

Svenya has been working for the Wave Project for a year now, after previously working in education and sports development. She says:

Tarq is our awesome Lead Surf Coach when working with The Wave Project. He works as Era’s Actvity Office Manager and has also worked on our Surf Back to School programme. He says:

Stu is one of the Owners at Era Adventures. He has been surfing for 19 years alongside being involved in the outdoor activity industry for over 15 years!

Occy is one of the Owners at Era Adventures. He has been a Beach Lifeguard and Surf Coach for over 11 year and has trained many Lifeguards in his time!

Lead Surf Club Mentor and Event Volunteer

Rachel’s daughter joined our project back in 2016 and has gone on to join our Surf Club. Rachel has volunteered herself at Surf Club sessions and at events such as The Jess Memorial. Rachel also makes the best brownies! She says:

“We both have so much fun. There aren’t really adequate words to say what my daughter (and I) get out of coming to Surf Club. Thank you doesn’t seem enough but thank you!”

North Cornwall Volunteer of the Year 2017

Nick has been part of The Wave Project family volunteering since 2014 and is now one of our esteemed Lead Surf Mentors. Nick loves the Wave Project and we love him! Nick is an absolute legend, helping out at almost every single session that we ran at Polzeath last year. As a resulthe was nominated as North Cornwall’s Volunteer of the Year in 2017. We are so lucky to have him!

North Cornwall Young Volunteer of the Year 2017

Matilda was shortlisted as one of The Wave Project’s Young Volunteers of the Year in 2017. Matlida travelled down to Cornwall from Bath most weekends to volunteer with us…How awesome is that!? She says:

“Everyone was very welcoming and supportive; helping introduce you to the children and I felt no pressure within the team. It has increased my confidence and belief in myself. Anyone considering volunteering at The Wave Project, especially as part of the D of E Award should definitely go for it! It’s given me so many new opportunities which I am very grateful for.”

Surf Mentor at Summerleaze

We’re stoked to have Andy as one of our Surf Mentors at Summerleaze and he has been involved with the Wave Project since it first began in North Cornwall! He travels all the way from Weston-Super-Mare to help out at sessions, what a legend! Hesays:

“As a Surf Mentor since the early days, it’s a pleasure to see the young people grow and challenge themselves. At the end of the 6 weeks session you can see the difference! This would not have been possible without the drive of the Wave Project. Encourage and do not judge what young people can or cannot do”.

Esme is epic and has helped out in all sorts of ways! She has volunteered as a Surf Mentor; helped at events and fundraised for us The Retallack Rampage along with Svenya and Team Wave. She says:

“The Wave Project has literally turned my life around…Volunteering for the Wave Project helped strive my motivation into going back to University to finish my final year in Psychology! Theres so many different ways you can get involved and you really feel you are making a huge difference! I would recommend anyone to become a volunteer, I just wish I got involved sooner!!”

Lead Volunteer Surf Mentor at Summerleaze

We’re stoked to have Stuart as one of our Lead Volunteers at Summerleaze and he has been involved with the Wave Project since it first began in North Cornwall! He says:

For me its being able to give to others what I consider the most precious thing in the world. As surfers we all remember riding our first wave. To be able to share that with others is a truly magical thing. Sharing that first shaka! To see that smile, to hear that laugh; its humbling and precious. We are all chasing our perfect wave, come and start your journey to find yours, you never know where it may take you…!

Volunteer Surf Mentor

Isaac completed a 6 week Surf Therapy course back in 2017 and since he turned 14 years old this year, he has gone on to volunteer as a Surf Mentor and become a member of our Surf Club. He says:

“12 months ago, I was a different person. The Wave Project has transformed me into someone new. I urge anyone who is given the opportunity to go for it! You never know where it may take you!”

Lead Volunteer at Summerleaze

Lee is one of our epic Lead Volunteers at Summerleaze and helps out most weeks安hat a legend! Hes volunteered across Cornwall projects as well as North Devon too! He says:

I love to surf and with the Wave Project I can share this joy with others riding waves for their first time. It’s great that at the end of each session everyone leaves the water smiling and laughing. After six weeks it’s a good feeling knowing that most have become hooked on a sport that will bring joy for the rest of their lives.

Neil is one of our awesome longstanding volunteers in North Cornwall. We’re super lucky having such a reliable volunteer in Neil, who volunteers at Polzeath most weeks. He’s also enabled us to take some epic surf snaps, which you can check out in our gallery. He says:

“I have been involved with the Wave Project for the past 3 years and Polzeath is my local surf spot. I love helping people learn to enjoy the water!”

Surf Mentor and Event Volunteer

Emma has been volunteering with the Wave Project since 2017. She volunteers mainly at Summerleaze but has also assisted at Polzeath. Emma has awesomely helped out with events such as the car boot. She says:

“I love volunteering with the Wave Project. I know how much surf therapy has helped me in the past so I want to share this as much as I can. It’s awesome watching the kids progress each week and working alongside the fellow volunteers, Wave Project staff and partner Surf Schools.”

Lead Surf Mentor at Summerleaze

Claire has been volunteering with the Wave Project since 2017. Claire has volunteered at both locations and this season she has been helping out at Summerleaze beach.She is amazing and rarely misses a session; as a result is one of our Lead Volunteers. She says:

“I love volunteering with the Wave Project! The aim is for everyone to have fun and feel supported along the way. It’s great to see the children getting such enjoyment from the sea and building confidence as well as hearing their excited YEWWWs!”
