In 2016 the Wave Project expanded northwards after receiving a grant of £13,500 from North Yorkshire Council to fund a pilot scheme in Scarborough. The project was a partnership between The Wave Project and integrated mental health services at North Yorkshire Council. The pilot scheme took place at North Bay in Scarborough in April 2016, when 16 young people were referred for surf therapy in the North Sea.
Since then, we have now worked with over 500 young people from all across the region, have our own office down on the West Pier and we are now entering into our sixth year in North Yorkshire. Delivering surf therapy courses in partnership with Scarborough Surf School at Cayton Bay and Dexter’s Surf Shop at North Bay as well as from our own unit on Scarboroughs historic South Bay.
We also have a growing surf club made up of some of the awesome young people who have completed one of our surf therapy courses. Our South Bay base will also be the home of our new adaptive surfing hub, the first of it’s kind in the region. This is really exciting for us and is the result of a lot of effort behind the scenes to get it off the ground.
We are now taking referrals for our 2024 courses in North Yorkshire, being held at Cayton Bay and South Bay. If you are a professional working with young people in the area please get in touch.
