Summer Surf Challenge 2019 – Save the Date!
The annual Summer Surf Challenge for 2019 will be taking place on the 20-21st of July this year at Watergate Bay.
The Summer Surf Challenge takes place annually in Cornwall, and offers disabled people of all ages the opportunity to try surfing free of charge. This year the event will be following on from our record breaking 2018 event which saw more participants and volunteers than ever before!
The Summer Surf Challenge brings together the whole surfing community who volunteer their time to help run free surf taster sessions for people with disabilities.
Pro surfers and former champions, including Russell Winter, and ambassadors Hannah Harding, Tom Butler and Lucie Donlan have all previously attended the event.
Attendees will be supported by surf volunteers from partner Wave Project locations from all over the country. The event is also supported by Watergate Bay Hotel, and the Extreme Academy. City-based insurance firm Amlin contribute to the funding of the event each summer.
Wave Project founder Joe Taylor said: “The Summer Surf Challenge is our annual celebration of inclusive surfing, enabling disabled people the opportunity to try something new. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for surfers and the local community to volunteer their time to help others.
“The atmosphere down on the beach is always emotional for our surfers and their families. Surfing may not have been something our participants have ever felt able to do, but we’ll catch waves with them and show them that they are just as able to enjoy the surf. It’s such a wonderful weekend to be part of.”
“Our funding from Amlin ensures that our costs for the event are covered and that the project can take place every year, something for which we are hugely grateful.”
Volunteer and participant registrations will be opening soon for this annual event, so be sure to save the date in your calendar.
