How Surf Therapy Changed a Lives in Polzeath
At The Wave Project, we often hear stories that remind us of the transformative power of Surf Therapy. One Polzeath family recently shared their journey:
“The Wave Project has been an invaluable life changing experience for my foster son. He has always loved and been confident in the water. However, Surf Therapy offered something more than that, they created a little family with friendship, security and smiles all round.

“Their encouragement and 100% dedication as a group of volunteers left a positive lasting impression upon my foster son. What started as an apprehensive journey each week to our favourite beach for The Wave Project soon turned into an adventure of sheer excitement and enjoyment. He came alive in the sea, laughed and smiled abundantly. He took risk, learning to first kneel and then stand up, riding the waves.
“My wonderful boy who really struggles with friendship and communication built a relationship with J (his buddy at The Wave project) an unbreakable trust as my boy rode through the waves. I cannot thank them enough for that. This was not only my foster sons journey, I also enjoyed being part of group, watching and noticing all the other children and young people come alive, overcome their fears of water and other new things. Watching them soar high above the waves brought great pride too. The ‘therapy’ did not just end there, my boy would come home feeling contented, at peace, high on confidence, his wellbeing restored from a tough week at school. He slept more soundly in that six weeks than ever before. We continue our journey with The Wave Project, even though the initial six weeks have now finished.
“We were invited to join Surf Club. Each month we go along and meet up with familiar faces, all the weather proof kit is provided. Most recently, we had opportunity to experience Flow Rider. Wow what an amazing time my boy had, he was absolutely in surf heaven. Loving every second of it learning new skills, and experience. Testing out new skills, learning to take risk in a safe space. Each month he now gets excited about what Surf Club have to offer, and we are now booked into the next Flow Rider and looking forward to Christmas Surf. I highly recommend this experience for all ages it was a wonderful opportunity that we are very privileged to be able to take part in and continue.”
