The Impact of Surf Therapy: A Referral Partner’s Story
‘The Wave Project has been an incredible source of support for our young people, guiding them through some of the most challenging times in their lives.’
We talk with Claire*, a Referral Partner for The Wave Project, on the impact of Surf Therapy on both a personal and professional level.

‘The Wave Project has been an incredible source of support for our young people, guiding them through some of the most challenging times in their lives. Their dedication and compassion have made a profound impact, helping our children build resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging. In front line services, we see children living within the most difficult circumstances from extreme poverty, neglect, domestic violence, bereavement and more. The damage these Adverse Childhood Experiences create cannot be understated.’
As a Former SENDco for TEAM Multi-Academy Trust and a Family Practitioner for Devon County Council, Claire* continues:
‘Jaz [Project Coordinator in North Devon] and the volunteers at The Wave Project surround these young people with joy, love and hope. They not only learn new skills but learn to have faith that things can improve. The Wave Project has provided a safe and nurturing environment where our young people can thrive. The positive changes we’ve witnessed in their lives are a testament to the transformative power of The Wave Project‘s work.’

Claire* also has experience of the effects of Surf Therapy on a more personal level.
‘As someone who has, also, personally experienced support from The Wave Project for my own child, I can attest to the long-lasting difference the project makes. Staff are not only professional and skilled but also genuinely caring and empathetic.
Claire* also recognised the impact of our 1:1 Surf Mentor support: ‘They take the time to understand each individual’s unique needs and tailor their support accordingly. This personalized approach has been instrumental in helping the young people we have referred overcome their difficulties and emerge stronger.
‘Every aspect of the program is designed to promote mental well-being and foster a sense of community. Our young people have not only gained new skills but also formed lasting friendships and memories. We are deeply grateful for the support and dedication of The Wave Project. Their impact on our community is immeasurable, and we highly recommend their services to anyone seeking a positive and empowering experience for young people. The Wave Project truly makes a difference, and we are proud to have them as a partner in supporting our youth.’
