Volunteering and University – Eleanor Blog

Hello, I’m Eleanor. I am a student at the University of Plymouth and am also a surf mentor for the wave project. I volunteer for the South Devon group at Bigbury beach.

I heard about the wave project before coming to university and thought it would be a good way to spend some time in the ocean whilst helping others and having fun. I found the specific volunteering opportunity on the university’s website where they have a catalogue of volunteering positions available at many different places. The university also encourage students to log the hours they spend volunteering, so they can keep track of what they’re doing and the skills they’re learning.

However, as well as allowing me to develop skills useful for later life and postgraduate opportunities, it’s so much more than that, it’s fun! Being a student, it can be hard to find the time to fit everything in. Between the coursework, exams and other activities, little time is left for anything else, but I am so glad I managed to squeeze in time to volunteer at the wave project. It is worth every minute I give to it and I hope the surfers who take part in all their programmes enjoy it as much as I do!
