The Wave Project in Scarborough has made it through to the finals of the National Lottery People’s Projects.

The National Lottery People’s Projects are an opportunity for the public to have their say in where National Lottery funding goes in their local community.

In September 2017 the Big Lottery Fund invited projects that have previously received funding, through its small grants programme, to say what they had achieved and how they would like to develop their project further.

The Wave Project has been shortlisted alongside four other charities, within the ITV Calendar News area, to be in with a chance of winning up to £50 000 from the National Lottery.
The Wave Project is a charity that helps young people improve their emotional health and resilience through an evidence-based programme of surfing and mentoring.

Run mainly by volunteers, the charity’s award-winning intervention is now delivered in 11 locations around the UK. Wave Project Scarborough is now entering into its third year having worked with almost 100 children and volunteers in the local area.

The next Wave Project sessions will be starting at the end of April and this year The Wave Project is on target to work with a further 50 local children and acting as a crucial lifeline service for young people who may otherwise find themselves struggling at school and at home.

Wave Project coordinator Chris Carter said: “It really would be awesome if we could get this funding, it would mean that we can offer even more sessions to young people in the area. Not just in Scarborough, but the whole of the North Yorkshire coast.”

Wave Project CEO Joe Taylor said: “It has been remarkable to see the change in the participants in Scarborough, they’ve grown in confidence and are doing better in so many aspects of their lives’ as a direct result of involvement in the project.”

ITV Calendar News have already filmed the Wave Project in action on the beach in Scarborough. The finished film will be shown on 19th April on the 6 o’clock Calendar news.

Voting opens on 16th April and can be done via the People’s Projects Website or by freepost.
