Summer Surf Challenge 2017

Summer Surf Challenge 2017

Have you heard about our Summer Surf Challenge event? This is a FREE event sponsored by insurance company MS Amlin that we hold every year for people with any kind of disabilities at any age. We give them the chance to try surfing supported by lots of volunteers and experienced surf coaches. This year the event will be the 8 & 9 of July at Watergate Bay. Please share with people that might be interested in either participating or volunteering; the more people that are there, the more fun we’ll have! Over the weekend participants will be able to turn up to go for a free surfing lesson with experienced staff. Pro surfers and former champions including Hannah Harding, Tom Butler and Lucie Donlan will be among the volunteers. Participants will all get a medal and special prizes will be given to surfers who are selected by the sponsors. Volunteers will include staff from the Wave Project, Cornwall Fire Service, RNAS Culdrose and Cornwall’s surf lifesaving clubs. The event will also include live music on the beach and an after party at Wax nightclub in Watergate Bay village. Joe Taylor said the emphasis was on inclusion and having fun. He said “We’re stoked to be running the Surf Challenge once again this year. It’s great to be able to put on a free surf event for disabled people, many of whom find it hard to access our beaches let alone go for a surf. I can’t wait to see lots of smiles on the faces of the participants.” Joe said that the charity was particularly grateful to the staff...
Summer Surf Challenge 2016

Summer Surf Challenge 2016

Scores of children with disabilities took part in a fantastic weekend of free surfing lessons at Watergate Bay in Cornwall for the Wave Project Summer Surf Challenge 2016. Over 70 young people, some with very complex disabilities, hit the surf on the hottest weekend of the year. The event was funded by insurance company MS-Amlin Plc and supported by the Watergate Bay Hotel and Xtreme Academy surf school. Over 100 volunteers came to help run the surfing lessons free of charge of local disabled children. They included sponsored surfers Tom Butler, Russell Winter, Hannah Harding and Lucie Donlan, as well as volunteers from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and RNAS Culdrose. It was the fifth year that the event has taken place, and was hailed as the best yet due to the fantastic weather, great atmosphere and perfect surfing conditions. The Wave Project’s events coordinator Becky Parry said: “It was amazing to be there. We’re so stoked to have taken so many children with disabilities surfing on such a lovely weekend. The smiles on the faces say it all.” Every participant received a medal, and two trophies were handed out to children who had displayed fantastic courage – Harley Clark, 6, from and Felix Haslam-Hopwood, 8, from St Wenn, both of whom overcame a lot of anxiety. Other participants included children with severe disabilities such as cerebral palsy, blindness and complex learning disabilities. Wave Project founder Joe Taylor said: “We are so proud to be able to run the Surf Challenge once again this year in Cornwall. The event is designed to give children who wouldn’t usually be able to surf...

Announcing the LOUDEST event on the water – Paddle Out LOUD

Registration has opened for the LOUDEST fundraising event on water – The Wave Project’s Paddle Out LOUD. Paddler’s from across the UK will be donning FLURO garb and setting out for a paddle on craft of varying shape and size. The event builds on the charity’s successful stand up paddleboard fundraiser, which took place at 10 different sites across the UK last year and raised over £16,000. This year it will be bigger, better and LOUDER than ever – with over 500 people expected to take part at locations in Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, South Wales, London, Dunbar, Brighton and the Isle of Wight. All of the funds raised will go towards running more Wave Project surf therapy courses for young people in those areas. We are delighted to have been chosen as the charity partner for the 5th London Surf / Film Festival. The London Surf / Film Festival presented by Reef hits the UK 16th – 24th October 2015. Hosted across two weekends, the festival is a showcase of the very best international talent in the surf film industry, and if previous years are anything to go by, it’s going to be epic! As part of the festival, some of the UK’s most exciting creatives contribute to a specially commissioned gallery show, and this year, we are stoked to have been named their charity partner. Eight pieces of original artwork, inspired by iconic surf movie soundtracks, will preview during the LS/FF 2015 and be available for sale, with all proceeds going to the Wave Project. See how the beautiful artwork above was made by the talented Nick Radford…   Huge thanks to the London Surf / Film Festival team, POW and all of the very clever creatives who have contributed their work.
